What is your Body Mass Index (BMI)?
Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the key factors for staying healthy. Research has shown that both excessive and insufficient body weight represent a risk for developing severe diseases. For more information, please see Body Mass Index Definition and Limitations.
Body Mass Index Definition and Limitations
The Body Mass Index is a simple body weight self-assessment tool that compares a person's height and weight. Although the Body Mass Index is a great tool, it has certain limitations. The result does not differentiate between sex or muscular and bone mass. For example, an individual with an above average bone or muscular mass could obtain a higher Body Mass Index result (still within the "normal" range or slightly over it). Also, the Body Mass Index does not provide information concerning the distribution of fat tissues which, in some cases, can further increase health risks. The Body Mass Index does not apply to those under 18 years of age nor to pregnant and lactating women. Keep in mind that the Body Mass Index should be used as a self-awareness tool and not for diagnosis.
