The Standard Life Assurance Company appoints a new member to its Executive Team

Montreal, August 19, 2005 - Joseph Iannicelli, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Standard Life Assurance Company of Canada, is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Vincenzo Ciampi to the position of Vice-President, Strategy and Corporate Development.

Mr. Ciampi will support the lines of business and divisions in the development of their strategic plans, while ensuring that these plans are in line with the overall corporate strategies. He will be also responsible for monitoring the implementation of all the business unit strategic plans, making sure that they will allow the Company to improve its competitive advantage. Finally, he will research and identify new opportunities, which could contribute to the long-term success of the Company.

Prior to this appointment, Mr. Ciampi worked for an important information technology consulting firm where he was Director, Strategic Projects. He has also had important management responsibilities with insurance and banking firms. Mr. Ciampi graduated from McGill University where he obtained his B. Com. in marketing and international business. He also obtained his MBA from the HEC Montral.
