David Nish was appointed Chairman of the Board in January 2010. He joined Standard Life plc on November 1, 2006 as Group Finance Director and remained in that position until December 2009. He succeeded Sir Sandy Crombie to the position of Chief Executive on January 1, 2010. From 1999 to 2005, Mr. Nish was Finance Director at Scottish Power plc and, subsequently Executive Director, Infrastructure Division, Scottish Power plc. Previously he was a partner with Price Waterhouse, where his clients included several financial services companies and large plcs.
In 2005, Mr. Nish was appointed to the board of Northern Foods plc as non-executive director and chairman of the audit committee. From 2001-2002, he served as non-executive director of Thus plc. and from 2002 till 2008 was a non-executive director of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. In 2000, he was awarded the Scottish Business Awards' Finance Director of the Year award and, last but not least, from 2004 to 2005, he served on the Government Employers Pension Task Force. He is also a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland.
Charles Guay joined Standard Life in January 2012. He continues to build on the rich Canadian history of the company, ensuring the growth of their three major business areas: retirement savings and group insurance, and individual investment solutions.
Formerly, he held several executive positions with National Bank of Canada, including President and Chief Operating Officer of National Bank Investments, after having worked with Fidelity Investments Canada and RBC Dominion Securities.
In 2012, he received a HermÃ¨s career achievement award from UniversitÃ© Laval. He was honoured as one of Canada’s Top 40 under 40 in 2005, and was awarded the Arista Jeune cadre du QuÃ©bec award by the Jeune Chambre de commerce de MontrÃ©al.
Mr. Guay is active in his industry and his community. He currently serves on the Standing Committee on QuÃ©bec Affairs of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association and is a governor of Finance MontrÃ©al and of the Jeune Chambre de commerce de MontrÃ©al. He also serves on the board of Orchestre symphonique de MontrÃ©al and of the Sainte-Justine CHU Foundation.
Mr. Guay holds a bachelor degree in business administration, major in finance, from UniversitÃ© Laval and is a Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute.
After being appointed Director in September 2006, Mr. Black was appointed Deputy Chairman in March 2009. He has considerable experience in the Canadian financial services industry. Until recently, he held the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of Maritime Life. He is considered a leading member of our community and currently sits on the boards of Bank of Canada (Lead Director), Standard Life Trust Company, Symphony Nova Scotia, Shaw Group, Nova Scotia Business Inc., The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Public Affairs and Dalhousie University.
Appointed Director in October 2009, Mr. Arthur retired in 2008 after 38 years with Ernst & Young, where he held senior level responsibility for several multinational financial institution clients. Mr. Arthur is currently Chair of the Board of Directors of the Bridgepoint Health Foundation and Advisor to the International Accounting Standards for their Insurance Contracts project. He has served on many not-for-profit boards, including as chair of the Board of Trustees of the Trinity College in the University of Toronto. He has a Masters of Business Administration degree and is a Fellow Chartered Accountant. During his career, Mr. Arthur has worked with clients in many industries, including a number of not-for-profit and healthcare entities. He has, however, more recently specialized in serving financial institutions.
Roger Renaud was appointed Director in November 2006. He has been President of Standard Life Investments Inc. since 2006. That same year, he was appointed Director of The Standard Life Assurance Company of Canada and of Standard Life Investments Limited in the UK. Mr. Renaud joined Standard Life in 1991 and, over the years, has been given increased responsibilities. He earned his credentials in the financial services industry by holding key positions with major investment brokers over a period of seven years prior to joining Standard Life. He is a notably frequent lecturer in various industry circles. Mr. Renaud holds a B.Sc. (Actuarial Science) from UniversitÃ© Laval, a CFA designation and completed Harvard Business School's program for management development.
Mr. Rocchi was appointed Director in January 2013. He is a co-founder and currently serves as CEO of Green Power Action, an environmental finance firm that launched Canadaâ€™s first carbon offset credit fund. Mr. Rocchi served as the first independent Chair of the Board of Directors of the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC) in 2011 and 2012, and was a director of IIROC for eight years. He has extensive experience as a senior executive, director and advisor in a broad array of disciplines, including investment management, pension investment and finance, strategic analysis, business development, risk control and client services. He worked for many years with Barclays Global Investors (now part of Blackrock Global Investors), including as CEO of Barclays Global Investors Canada from 1997 to 2004, as well as with Imperial Oil and Exxon.
Mr. Roy was appointed Director in October 2009. He has been President and Chief Executive Officer of SECOR since 2007. He has 25 years of experience in the consulting field across the world, advising companies of all sizes. He has been posted in Canada, the US, Europe and Latin America and has helped manage, acquire and divest of companies in each of these regions.
Mr. Skeoch was appointed Director of The Standard Life Assurance Company of Canada in July 2010. He was appointed Director of Standard Life plc in May 2006, after having been a director of The Standard Life Assurance Company since March 2006. He is Chief Executive of Standard Life Investments Limited. Keith joined Standard Life Investments Limited in 1999 after nearly 20 years investment experience at James Capel & Co. Limited in a number of roles, including Chief Economist and Managing Director, International Equities. He is also a director of the Investment Management Association, a board member of the Association of British Insurers and a member of the Advisory Board of Reform Scotland.
Sheelagh Whittaker became a director in June 2013. She is a former director of Standard Life plc and a member of its risk and capital, remuneration, nomination and governance, and investment committees.
Ms. Whittaker spent much of her business career as a corporate officer in the information technology and communications industries. She worked with Electronic Data Systems Inc., initially as President and CEO of EDS Canada, then as Executive Vice-President in Asia Pacific, before transferring to London where she served as Managing Director. She also held leadership roles with The Canada Consulting Group (now Boston Consulting Group), the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and Cancom (now Shaw Satellite Services).
Ms. Whittaker is the author of The Slaidburn Angel published by Dundurn in 2012.
